Kai Kanthak
Photographer

Kai Kanthak, born 1955, worked for many years as a jazz musician (b) with reputable OEuvre and a definite emphasis on free improvisation. His involvement in combos with Theo Jörgensmann, Petras Vysniauskas, Michel Pilz, and Perry Robinson, to name but a few, took him to many parts of Europe, and to such places as Lithuania and Latvia - realms which are almost unknown to the average German. Kai Kanthak played the bass in various productions with Theo Jörgensmann, at the New Jazz Meeting in Baden-Baden, Draft (Cologne 1993) Gruben Klang Orchestra etc. A few years ago he put his bass guitar aside, and devoted himself intensively to photography and 3D-Computer graphics.

Almost five years of quiet artistic work are expressed in the mature photographs which often focus on small, everyday details. Alongside these the technically perfectly manipulated pictures stand solo.

His Bryce works are a chapter which is almost completed. He had a long running exhibition in the Gründer- und Technologie Centrum in Gummersbach with "Landscapes" --- all large, high resolution prints.

In February 2001 PROPAGANDA: provides an exhibition at Kaffee Kult, Flensburg.

Kai Kanthak uses 2 somewhat older Leica cameras for his work ("from the seventies - no digital shit") and in general colour negative films. He usually photographs "available light" and only rarely makes use of artificial lighting.
